Substrand: "5.2 Body systems"

Subject: Primary Science Year: 5
Strand 1: Life and Living

Substrand: "5.2 Body systems" (15 periods)

Our body has special systems that complement each other in carrying out their functions. The major organ systems in mammals are the digestive system, the circulatory system and the respiratory system.

These systems play important roles in sustaining life. The digestive system absorbs nutrients from the food intake. The nutrients in the food are transported to the rest of the body in the blood by the circulatory system by the pumping action of the heart. Air that is inhaled through the respiratory system is absorbed and transported throughout the body by the circulatory system. The skeletal system, on the other hand, gives the body its shape and protects the inner organs. Similarly, the muscular system enables the body to move.

5.2.1 understand the functions of the major organ systems, namely skeletal, digestive, muscular, and circulatory and respiratory systems (u)

5.2.1.1 outline the basic functions of the major organ systems
5.2.1.2 show on a diagram the basic structure of the major organs

5.2.2 understand that during digestion, food is made soluble so that it can enter the blood (u)

5.2.2.1 state the reason why food must be made soluble before it enters the blood

5.2.3 know that our sense organs enable us to find out about changes in the environment (k)

5.2.3.1 name and locate the five (5) sense organs

5.2.4 appreciate the interrelationship between systems in the process of maintaining life (v)

5.2.4.1 explain how the digestive system absorbs nutrients into the blood, the respiratory system filters air into the blood, and the circulatory system distributes blood to the body
