Section 3: Aims
The aims of the English Language syllabus are to:
- equip learners for effective communication in the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in English so that they can use these skills to facilitate their learning of other subjects.
- enhance the learners’ skills in listening so that they can become active listeners to their teachers, fellow students and other members of their community.
- help learners to gain proficiency and confidence in speaking so they can communicate effectively among themselves and others in formal and informal situations.
- encourage the learners to enhance their skills in reading and learn to value reading as an important source of enjoyment and information.
- equip learners with the necessary skills and conventions in writing so that they can express themselves clearly and in the style of writing that is appropriate to the purpose and intended audience.
- build learners’ confidence in the grammatical rules and help them to achieve proficiency in reading, speaking and writing through active participation in class activities with their teachers, peers, and the texts used.
- familiarise learners with the different styles of writing so that they can learn to use them effectively for learning and real life purposes.
- encourage learners to appreciate different forms of literature and to enhance their reading and analytical skills; they will also develop understanding of themselves and other people.
- equip learners with the basic research and study skills needed to enhance learning for useful purposes.
- help learners to be informed about issues which affect their lives and the society at large.
- help learners to develop positive attitudes and values so that they can share and interact with others in an atmosphere of peace and harmony.
- help learners become competent and proficient users of English so that they can live fulfilled lives.
- enhance critical thinking skills in learners through a variety of interactive activities such as group discussions, debates, reading analysis and writing.
- encourage learners to think in English and to be able to translate(decipher) English into their own language (decode information), and the other way round.
