The English language is internationally recognised as an important lingua franca used for communication in the modern global community. It is the official language of Solomon Islands and has become a valuable tool for learners in schools and users in many levels of the community.
As a medium of instruction in the schools and higher institutions of learning, English is used throughout the curriculum in textbooks, libraries, computers, the internet, and also used by instructors and teachers to transfer knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to learners. The teaching and learning of English therefore, must continue from what was initially developed in primary schools so that learners can acquire the necessary skills they need to enhance their learning in schools and higher institutions.
English is the official language of the government, and is used widely for communication in the media on issues concerning trade and economic relations, political conferences and meetings, legal proceedings, church services and activities of non-governmental organisations. In order for Solomon Islanders to become actively involved in communicating issues that affect their nation and their life, especially in today’s globalised society, they have to be literate in English. Being competent in English will give Solomon Islanders the opportunity to maximise their potential for self-advancement and the benefit of their own community.
In the school curriculum English plays a vital role, for the skills it entails are needed by learners to facilitate their learning so that they can achieve the best in their education and become active members of their community. In English, learners are given the opportunity to practise and improve skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as creativity and critical thinking, and are encouraged to apply the skills in all relevant situations. The study of literature in particular, will help learners to develop an understanding of themselves and others as well as their ability to think critically and accept the differences that frequently disturb harmony and peace in society. Learners also need to continually equip themselves with the appropriate skills for study and research so that they can correctly apply them and gain optimum benefit in their future learning.
On the whole, the teaching and learning of English is geared towards the achievement of proficiency in communications skills, the enhancement of critical thinking, literacy and study skills. These, in turn will allow learners to become skilful and live more productive lives in their schools and the wider community.
