Section 4: Syllabus Structure

The syllabus for Year 1 to 6 primary health Education is presented in section 12. It is a series of sub-strand sheets; each sheet has the same structure.

This is a copy of the sub-strand structure, with an explanation of each part.

Subject: Primary Health Year: No
Strand: Title

A strand is the term for the main areas of study into which the subject is divided. In primary Health education, there are five strands: Personal Health, Growth and Development; Food and Nutrition for Health; Personal Body Care and Safety; Healthy Communities and Environments; and Diseases and Drug Education. This section contains the Strand statement for the year.

Substrand: Title (no. Periods)

A strand is sub-divided into sub-strands. For example, Food, Nutrition and Health strand, there are sub-strands for each year: Year 1 – Eating for Health; Year 2 – Healthy Food for Healthy Growth; Year 3 – Food Groups; Year 4 – Food Hygiene and Safety; Year 5 – Making a Healthy Diet; Year 6 – Healthy Eating Practices.

General Learning Outcomes Specific Learning Outcomes Suggested Assessment Events

Learner’s should:

General Learning Outcomes (GLO) are broad statements that specify what learners will know or be able to do as a result of a learning activity. Outcomes are usually expressed from the domains of:

  • knowledge (k) and
    understanding (u)
  • skills (s)
  • attitudes (a) and values (v)

Specific Learning Outcomes
(SLO) are detailed and specific examples of what learners can do, demonstrate or understand if
they have achieved the General Learning Outcomes. They are usually observable, measurable
and achievable.

For selected Specific Learning
Outcomes, the syllabus provides a suggested assessment. These assessments may be formative or summative activities and teachers should record – formally or informally – each learner’s progress for the purposes of planning further teaching and learning activities and for reporting on progress. Assessment activities will draw from the domains of knowledge and understanding, skills and attitudes and values.
