Primary Social Studies Syllabus

Strand 5: Time, Continuity and Change

Learners recognize reasons why people did things in the past, why events took place and what happened as a result. They examine features of past periods and societies, including ideas, beliefs, attitudes and experiences of women, men and children. Learners identify differences between ways of life in different periods and make links between events, situations, and changes within periods and societies. They identify different ways in which the past is represented. They begin to understand that there are reasons for different interpretations, and that these interpretations influence people’s actions. They distinguish between fact and point of view.

Learners find out about the people, events, and changes of the past from a range of sources of information. They select from their knowledge of history, organize historical information using dates and appropriate vocabulary, and communicate that knowledge using various techniques. Learners place events and objects in chronological order, place events, people and changes in correct time periods, and use words, phrases and dates relating to the passage of time.
