Learners understand that places have features; people care for places they feel are important; livelihood processes affect both natural and built features of places. They value and appreciate the importance of places and the environment to people. They appreciate the ways in which places and environments are shaped by the locations, patterns, and processes associated with natural events (e.g. climate and weather) and with both natural and built features. Learners understand that features of places influence the activities of people and their attitudes towards places. They know how people and places are interdependent; and that this results in patterns of features and activities (e.g. transportation and communication) in different places. They understand how people find out about places, how people express their sense of belonging to particular places, and how environments become significant to people. Learners understand that people’s values influence how they behave to sustain their environment.
