Section 3: Aims
Social Studies aim is to prepare learners in the Solomon Islands to become confident, informed and responsible citizen of a changing society. In doing so, they will be able to contribute to the effective development of their communities and their country to aware, confident, active citizens and lifelong learners.
To achieve this, Learners will be assisted to do the following:
- explore the concepts required to understand the Human Society functions as a result of the interaction between people, socially, politically, economically and environmentally over time as identified in the five strands.
- develop and use skills in understanding how societies, locally, within the Pacific region and the world are organized and the people and communities respond and are shaped by different values, viewpoints and perspectives.
Social Studies is part of the Primary School Curriculum so that learners can:
- become informed, confident and responsible citizens who contribute in positive ways to their communities;
- develop positive attitudes of pride, respect, acceptance, responsibility, honesty, caring, sharing and stewardship;
- develop skills that promote good relationships in their lives;
- develop skills of problem-solving, critical thinking, initiative and curiosity;
- develop an appreciation of the importance of relationships between people and events through time and interpretations of these relationships;
- develop an understanding of people’s allocation and management of resources and people’s participation in economic activities;
- develop the skills of gathering and analyzing information and acting on the new information;
- develop an understanding of the importance of goods and services in their everyday living;
- develop skills through various activities and to realize that communities are organized to meet the needs of the people;
- understand viewpoints and perspectives which are shared amongst communities.
