Primary Social Studies Syllabus

Section 2: Rationale

Social Studies is an integrated study of the Social Science and humanities to promote civic competence. Social Studies provides coordinated, systematic study drawing upon such disciplines as anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion and sociology as well as appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics and natural sciences within the school.

The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public’s good as citizens of a culturally diverse democratic society in an interdependent world.

Teaching & learning social studies in the primary years, will encouraged to develop knowledge, skills for participatory citizenship, appreciation and a sense of responsibility for global communities; its relationship; customs; beliefs and values.

The benefit of a more global understanding is significant for Solomon Islands’ learners as many are destined to travel and live in other countries. Also their own country may become a tourist destination where people of many cultures come together. As the prospect of globalization of culture and economy increases, awareness becomes the greatest means of protection for Solomon Islands cultural independence.

Social Studies enable learners to develop knowledge and understandings of the diverse and dynamic nature of society and their co-existence among cultures, societies and environments. Learners develop and apply skills as they investigate society, explore issues, making decisions and work cooperatively well with others. The understandings and skills they develop will enable them to participate in a changing society as informed, confident and responsible citizens.

Social Studies contribute to integral human development by helping learners to develop skills and attitudes that are important for national identity and nation building.

By the end of Year 6, learners should be sufficiently prepared to undertake more advanced studies in the specialist Social Science disciplines of Geography, History, Economics and Social Studies.
