Farming is an integral part of people’s livelihood in Solomon Islands. Farming is fun, worthwhile and has huge economic benefit for people both in the rural and urban areas.
Learners recognize the importance of farming as a source of food, a source of money and appreciate its value for living. Learners understand the importance of soil as a medium within which plants grow. Learners learn about the many different types of gardening tools; how to correctly use and properly store them. They also learn about the nursery process, transplanting and caring for their gardens. Learners use these skills and do a special school garden project. Learners observe and explore the different types of commercial farming: e.g. poultry farming, pig husbandry, oil palm farming, coconut plantation, chilly growing and vanilla growing. Learners appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of commercial farming. Learners perceive the importance of good management of income generated from commercial farming.
