Strand 1: Life and Living

There is a diversity of living things engaged in complex interactions with each other and the physical world. Human beings are part of this living web, interacting with all its aspects. Understanding our own biology and that of other living things, and recognizing our place in this web, is essential to our survival and the survival of the biosphere. The living world has levels of organization ranging from the cell to the biosphere. Life forms have changed over time; today’s flora and fauna are related to earlier forms through genetic inheritance.

Learners discover through observation and they comprehend the variety of living things from small to massive. Learners learn about relationships between living things, and that they depend on each other and the environment for survival. Humans have responsibility to care for the environment and things in it. Learners investigate the process of photosynthesis. Learners study plants and animals in a local habitat, map food chains and discuss the interrelationships revealed. Learners investigate the interaction of living things with their environments and the impact of human activities on the ecosystems. They carry out activities and record information about habitats and life in environments such as coral reefs and rainforest. Learners discover that flowering plants and mammals go through stages of growth, development, reproduction and death. They study the digestive, circulatory and respiratory systems. Learners observe living things and identify similarities and differences in their structure and adaptation to their habitat.
