Section 3: Aims
This syllabus aims to provide scientific understanding for all learners of year 1 to year 6 students in the Solomon Islands. This syllabus has an overall aim to present the scientific knowledge, skills, values and attitudes within the context of Solomon Islands. It aims to equip student with basic scientific knowledge who leave at year 6 and secondly to prepare students who would continue on to year 7. In the broad terms, this syllabus will enable learners to:
- Develop and support children’s existing knowledge based on new scientific knowledge and understanding;
- understand that science involves particular processes and ways of developing and organizing knowledge;
- appreciate that there is traditional scientific knowledge in local culture and that such knowledge can be used to explain present scientific problems;
- understand that Science knowledge and process continue to change;
- use their scientific knowledge and skills for problem solving and investigation for developing further knowledge;
- use scientific knowledge and skills to improve their livelihoods and make sound decisions;
- Gain scientific knowledge and skills that can help understand the impact on the environment and cultures of people;
- ability to use scientific knowledge for their own and their local community.
