Strand 5: Diseases and Drug Education

This strand will develop an understanding of germs and how germs cause and spread diseases; explore ways in which communicable and non communicable diseases are spread by pathogens and/or germs; identify and recognize signs and symptoms of major communicable and non-communicable diseases; and learn to appreciate how immunization, health screening or checks and sanitary practices prevents the spread of diseases.

Learners acquire knowledge about the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, betel nut, marijuana and other mind altering drugs; develop strategies for resisting peer and media influences regarding potentially harmful substances; develop some understanding of prevention and intervention strategies to control the effects of mind altering drugs; and also learn how to use medication properly and avoid misuse and abuse.

The range of skills to be developed is: Health Advocacy; Interpersonal Communication and Relationships; Goal Setting, Self Management: Decision Making; Problem Solving and Critical Thinking; Accessing Information.
